"Put Yourself in the Shoes of a Dyslexic"

The Winston School San Antonio (WSSA) will offer the disability simulation, "Put Yourself in the Shoes of a Dyslexic" on Saturday, October 2, 2004 from 9:00 a.m.–Noon at the WSSA campus. "I know my child so much better." "One of the best sessions I've attended in recent years." "Thanks for opening my eyes!" "I will be more patient and understanding with my son." "I had no idea the incredible daily challenges my child faces." are quotes from parents and educators who attended the Learning Disability Simulation in the past.
The simulation is a project of the California State Department of Education and is designed to increase awareness of the difficulties and the frustrations dyslexics and individuals with a language-based learning disability encounter daily.
Participants of the hands-on workshop rotate among six learning stations, which simulate various language-related tasks, similar to situations encountered in the classroom or workplace. The simulations will be conducted by graduate students from the Psychology Department of Trinity University.
- Station 1 simulates a beginning reading problem
- Station 2 simulates an auditory discrimination problem
- Station 3 simulates a visual motor skills problem on a written task
- Station 4 simulates a fine motor skills problem on a written task
- Station 5 simulates a visual perception and processing problem
- Station 6 simulates a hearing problem
Participants move around in 10 minute periods from one station to the next. The stations are designed to be stressful and participants may become fatigued and even emotional. The simulation leads to greater empathy and understanding of the problems and gives insights into working effectively with these individuals.
This free workshop was made possible by the Winston Institute, an educational outreach arm of The Winston School San Antonio that offers workshops facilitated by medical specialists, educators, and leading professionals presenting the most current information on topics related to learning disabilities/differences and Attention Deficit Disorder.
